Suppliers — Could Someone Else’s Security Problem Become Yours?

Outsourcing a service can transfer work. It does not automatically transfer the business consequences if that service fails.

Your business probably depends on other businesses

Email providers, cloud platforms, accountants, payment services, software companies, IT support and specialist partners may all hold information or provide services that your organisation needs.

If one of them suffers an incident, the effect can reach you through lost access, exposed information, fraudulent communication or disrupted operations.

Not every supplier needs the same scrutiny

A supplier delivering office stationery is different from a supplier administering your cloud environment or processing customer information.

Start by identifying the suppliers whose failure or compromise could create a meaningful business problem. That keeps the conversation proportionate.

Understand the dependency

For an important supplier, know what service it provides, what information it can access, whether it can access your systems, what the business would lose if the service stopped and what alternatives or recovery arrangements exist.

Security questionnaires can help, but collecting answers is not the objective. The objective is understanding whether the dependency is acceptable and what action is needed.

Responsibility is shared, not erased

A supplier may secure its platform while your organisation remains responsible for user accounts, permissions, configuration, information handling or recovery choices. Make the boundary clear.

Contracts and service commitments can support the relationship, but the business also needs a practical plan for what happens if the supplier cannot deliver.

BOI ACTION

Choose your most important digital supplier.

Ask: What do we depend on them for? What information or access do they have? What would happen if their service disappeared for a day? Who owns that dependency inside our business?

Write down one unanswered question and get an answer.

A useful question for the business

Which supplier could cause the biggest disruption to our business without ever entering our premises?

Don’t assume. Check.

A reputable supplier can still experience an incident. Understand the dependency and check the controls that matter to your business.
